The Ocean Mission 2020

September 28th 2020 Nordic Ocean Watch Denmark embark the Schooner Opal at Húsavik, Iceland. Together with Ocean Mission and a team of people studying or interested in Marine Science, Oceanography, Marine Biology and traditional sailing, we will set sails into some of the most unexplored and remote waters and landscapes; the hundred islands in Breiðafjörður, the stunning natural reserve in the Westfjords and the edge of the Artic on Grimsey Island. Route: North and West Coast of Iceland (400 nm aprox).

During this time of the year we start seeing the first northern lights and the landscapes experience a great colour transformation towards autumn. It is probably the calmest time of the year, with few tourists and great chances to discover. This is a unique opportunity to look for and study wildlife in places of difficult access where almost nobody else dares to go. Whales, winter birds, foxes and seals could be spotted if we are lucky!

“Set sail, for sustainability” - Ocean Mission

We will be trained through an exciting citizen science program where we will learn about the ocean, the marine life, the problems we are facing and how we can be part of the solution. All, in an inspiring environment surrounded by the natural elements, the wind and the sea!

Ocean Mission is made up by a small team of enthusiastic people with different ideas and professional backgrounds coming together to make a difference, helping our marine environment by conducting an exciting long term conservation project. Read more about Ocean Mission here.

Excited to keep you updated on our expedition from Húsavík to Reykjavik together with Ocean Mission.
