SIIKU

Inspired by the Greenlandic word for ice

We, Rasmus Nielsen and David H. Péronard, founded SIIKU back in 2017 with a desire to create art that focuses on climate and solidarity.

By utilizing the best from each of our different backgrounds in experience design and visual arts respectively, we created the SIIKU Manifesto as a tool for our practice.

Not only to have a better understanding of ourselves and our process, but also to inspire and the audience and welcome them into our creative universe.

With a challenged world and an imbalanced ecosystem that becomes progressively worse year after year, we strive to use our project to create new reflections and perspectives, through contrasting works of art that help to unite nature and technology.

Since the debut exhibition "Arrival" back in 2017, we have exhibited and collaborated with e.g., Kunsthal Aarhus, Thorvaldsen's museum, Click festival, Sophienholm Kunsthal and Copenhagen Light Festival.

ANKOMST, Arttra Gallery, 2018

The ocean plays a large role for us, both in our name, which is inspired by the Greenlandic word for ice (siku), as well as in our artistic practice, where we work with water as a material, i.e., frozen sculptural blocks or when we use water as a reflection mirror for one of our light artworks.

But the sea and nature are also where we escape to when we need to think long and hard or when we simply need to disconnect from the flow of everyday life and the big city. It is the place where we always find new inspiration and energy.

Walking on Danish or foreign beaches can often remind us, that our nature is increasingly burdened, when our eyes are directed at all the waste and marine plastic floating around.

All steps towards the future are important, both local and global, which is why initiatives like Nordic Ocean Watch and their work to protect the ocean environment are so important.

PASSING, Kulturmødet Mors, 2019

As people, parents and self-proclaimed dedicated dreamers, we naively believe that we can all make a difference if we work together to achieve it.

Among other things, we have made an attempt at the above with our co-created installations, covered with rubbish collected by volunteers around Copenhagen's canals.

In many ways, our thoughts and manifesto are reminiscent of Nordic Ocean Watch's vision: Tavaha. Simply translated from Nordic: protect the sea. The idea is, if you like it, take care of it!

It is therefore with pride that we start our collaboration with this post as part of Art for Ocean.
